Overview

Scottish Borders: Forests & Woodlands captures the timeless mystique of this historic region through the distinctive recording techniques of BAFTA-winning sound artist and composer Chris Watson (Frozen Planet, Secret World of Sound With David Attenborough). With detailed soundscapes of Britain’s ancient groves and waterways, Watson’s deep connection to the environment shines through in recordings made with minimal human interference – often captured remotely over hours to preserve the natural rhythm and presence of each location.

Although focused on woodland biomes, this library is about much more than trees. In addition to a huge variety of deciduous and evergreen forest ambiences, Watson’s recordings highlight the amazing biodiversity of the Scottish Borders region. You’ll hear multiple species of deer in their natural habitat, along with wild foxes, owls, and a stunning assortment of songbirds. Buzzing insects populate the forests in spring and summer, including close-up recordings of wasp and wood ant nests.

A pioneer of experimental recording, Watson uses specialty microphones and adventurous techniques to capture unique textures that make excellent material for creative sound design. Highlights include contact mics stuck in tree bark during heavy winds, subterranean rumbles recorded by microphones buried among tree roots, water freezing around hydrophones, and bats hunting with sonar recorded by a heterodyne receiver.
